Turkey vultures, known for their distinctive bald heads and large wingspans, are remarkable scavengers that play a vital role in their ecosystems. These birds can be found soaring high above open landscapes, using their keen sense of smell to locate carrion from impressive distances. With a wingspan reaching up to six feet, they glide effortlessly on thermal currents, conserving energy as they search for food. Unlike many birds of prey, turkey vultures rely primarily on smell rather than sight to find meals, making them unique among their avian counterparts. Their important ecological role helps prevent the spread of disease, as they efficiently consume dead animals, returning nutrients to the soil.
